Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the Menopause?
A: The Menopause is when your ovaries stop releasing eggs and you have your final period. It is also the times your oestrogen and progesterone levels drop (oestrogen and progesterone are female hormones that prepare you for a possible pregnancy). Experts believe it is these changes to the bodys chemistry which cause menopausal symptoms.
Q: How can I tell if the Menopause is starting?
A: Many women experience a range of symptoms and some women notice hardly any at all. The first sign is usually that your periods change and either get heavier or lighter. You may also notice hot flushes, night sweats and some irritability. This is called the peri-menopause and is the hormonal run up to your final period. The peri-menopause can last up to four or five years.
Q: How will the Menopause affect my health?
A: The night sweats, hot flushes and mood swings can be very distressing and can last for many years. However, in the longer term, lower oestrogen levels can also affect your bones and blood vessels and increase the risk of osteoporosis (a painful bone thinning condition) and heart disease.
Q: What are the most common symptoms of Menopause?
A: i) Hot Flushes - a feeling of heat anywhere from the feet to the head, but mainly in the head
ii) Night Sweats and sleeping problems - which may lead to feeling tired, stressed or tense
iii) Vaginal changes - the vagina may become dry and thin making sex painful.
iv) Thinning of the bones - this happens a couple of years afterwards and may lead to loss of height and brittle bones (osteoporosis).
v) Mood swings, anxiety and loss of confidence.
vi)Forgetfulness and difficulty in concentrating.
Q: Do I still need to use contraception?
A: If you want to avoid pregnancy then do not stop using contraception. If you have the Menopause before the age of 50, carry on using contraception for two years after your final period as you could still get pregnant. If you are over 50, then keep using contraception for at least 12 months after your last period.
Q: Should I take HRT?
A: Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) can help relieve symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats and vaginal dryness, but many women have been put off HRT after two studies suggested it could increase the risk of breast cancer, heart disease and stroke. Every woman should have a GP assessment of her risks so that she can make an informed decision about whether HRT is right for her.
Q: What are the alternatives?
A: If you dont want to take HRT then diet changes and exercise may help relieve symptoms. Some women find that alternative remedies such as red clover, black cohosh and soya beans can help relieve symptoms. A diet rich in calcium that includes green leafy vegetables, dairy products, tinned bony fish like salmon, tofu, dried figs and apricots may also help.
